Kerry & Mike’s Turner Hill Wedding Reception

Kerry & Mike’s Turner Hill Wedding Reception

Chet and I photographed Kerry & Mike’s wedding in October. Their ceremony was performed at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Topsfield, MA followed by a reception at Turner Hill in Ipswich. Kerry’s beautiful grey cat was quite interested in all the getting ready activity and appeared to want to get a free ride on the train of her dress! After the ceremony, we headed over to Turner Hill which is a stately venue for weddings and also a fine golf club. I was watching the movie Shutter Island a month or so later and was surprised to recognize Turner Hill as one of the locations in the film, although modified with computer graphics.

Dan and Carrie’s Wright’s Farm Wedding Reception in Rhode Island

Dan and Carrie’s Wright’s Farm Wedding Reception in Rhode Island

I was down in Harrisville, Rhode Island for Dan and Carrie’s wedding reception at Wright’s Farm in early October.  They were married during a ceremony at Ocean State Baptist Church in Smithfield, RI. The church has a lighted sign so they could have their name and event in lights the day of the wedding. Venue [...]

Joe and Laura’s Engagement Session at Minuteman National Historical Park

Joe and Laura's Engagement Session at Minuteman National Historical Park

My associate photographer Nicolaus took Joe and Laura to Minuteman National Historical Park in Concord, Massachusetts for their engagement session in early October so they could take advantage of the Fall colors. This is a great spot for portraits for the variety of scenes including rock walls, tall grasses, and of course the historic Old [...]

Cheryl and Mike’s Alpine Grove Wedding and Reception in Hollis, NH

Cheryl and Mike’s Alpine Grove Wedding and Reception in Hollis, NH

I photographed Cheryl and Mike’s wedding at Alpine Grove Banquet Facility in Hollis, NH in late September. That time of year is great for portraits because of the usual timing of a wedding when portraits are being taken–the light has a nice warm tone late in the day. Alpine Grove is a nice spot with tall pines on the bank of the Nashua River with a number of views for a variety of portrait possibilities.

Trash the Dress Group Photo Shoot!

Trash the Dress Group Photo Shoot!

One of my previous wedding clients organized a group of friends and “knotties” -that’s brides who use the forums on The Knot website when planning their wedding to have a group trash the dress session at Half Moon Beach in Gloucester, MA in September 2009. We had a total of 8 brides, some of which bravely jumped into the ocean at the end of a day of fun photography on the beach rocking the dress. I called the local newspaper to come along and they published a photo of me working as well as a shot of a group of the brides jumping in the ocean in their wedding dresses. Needless to say, we got the attention of lots of passersby as well as some boaters! We brought along Candice French to do the makeup.

Laura and Mike’s Barn at Gibbet Hill Wedding and Reception

Laura and Mike’s Barn at Gibbet Hill Wedding and Reception

Late September found me at Laura and Mike’s wedding at the Barn at Gibbet Hill in Groton, MA. This is such an amazing venue for weddings. Their food is top-notch, the views a spectacular, the feel is rustic upscale. There are loads of great scenes for portrait possibilities. Laura actually hiked up the hill at the venue to get ready. Unusual and brave indeed, but for good purpose. Mike hiked up after her and they had their first viewing and plenty of time for many more portraits of just the couple than we are usually able to get during a normal wedding timeline. There’s the remains of a castle which make for great photographs. I’m also a preferred photographer at the Barn at Gibbet Hill–this wedding is featured on their website for their wedding functions. Their venue is part of Webber Restaurant Group which also runs Fireside Catering, Scarlet Oak Tavern, the Gibbet Hill Grill, and the Estate at Moraine Farm.

Kate & David’s Hyatt Harborside Wedding in Boston

Kate & David’s Hyatt Harborside Wedding in Boston

Kate and David were married at St. Brendan’s in Dorchester and had their reception at the Hyatt Harborside in Boston afterwards. Wally The Green Monster made a surprise visit during their cake cutting, which thrilled them–they are avid Red Sox fans!

Chris & Mariamne’s wedding at Smith Barn at Brooksby Farm

Chris & Mariamne’s wedding at Smith Barn at Brooksby Farm

On the last Saturday in August, I photographed Chris and Mariamne’s wedding at the Smith Barn at Brooksby Farm in Peabody, Massachusetts. This is another one of those hidden North Shore gems that surprises the visitor with its rural setting in the middle of busy suburbs. In that regard, it reminds me of another north shore wedding venue- Moraine Farm in Beverly, MA. However, Moraine Farm has more of an estate feel and only has space for tent weddings. The Smith Barn has a nice rustic feel and there are multiple buildings, fences, lawns and an orchard to round out the possibilities for portrait photography choices. We took advantage of them all!

James and Gail’s Flag Hill Winery Wedding

James and Gail’s Flag Hill Winery Wedding

Nicolaus, one of my associates, was the photographer for James and Gail’s wedding at Flag Hill Winery in Lee, New Hampshire while I was up at Church Landing for another wedding. The couple kept the wine country theme going with a honeymoon in Italy. They had to dodge a few raindrops during their ceremony, but it cleared up enough for some outdoor portraits of the couple afterward. Hopefully they had better weather in Italy!

Kait and Mike’s Church Landing Wedding

Kait and Mike’s Church Landing Wedding

The second Saturday of September I was up at a very familiar location: Church Landing at Mill Falls in Meredith. I photographed Mike and Kait’s daytime wedding. Early start means lots of daylight. Seems like most NH wedding photographers are going to spend a fair amount of their time there as they host many weddings each year. I’ve lost count of the exact number I’ve photographed there, but it has rich picture possibilities, so there’s always a fresh angle. It’s also a great location throughout the seasons.

Matt & Jill’s Post-Wedding Trash the Dress Romp on Plum Island!

Matt & Jill's Post-Wedding Trash the Dress Romp on Plum Island!

I met up with Matt and Jill in early September for a post-wedding trash the dress photo session on the beach at Plum Island in Newburyport, MA. It’s a familiar spot for us-it’s mine and Jill’s hometown! Matt and Jill are longtime clients. I’ve photographed their engagement session, their wedding and now their post-wedding encore/trash the dress photo session.

Jen & LeRoy’s Boston Waterfront Engagement Session in Charlestown

Jen & LeRoy's Boston Waterfront Engagement Session in Charlestown

Late August found me in Charlestown along the waterfront with a view of the Boston skyline for an engagement photo session with Jen and LeRoy. Their first date was at Tavern on the Water restaurant in Charlestown so they wanted to have their photo session around the waterfront and backdrop of Charlestown buildings. Their wedding was held at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, MA in June of 2010. I’ll be posting images from that wedding soon.

Lakes Region Family Portrait Session

Lakes Region Family Portrait Session

I took Robert and Trista and their kids to Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, NH for their family portrait session in late August. Castle in the Clouds is a tourist spot for great views and for grabbing a lunch, and of course they host weddings and receptions too. It also makes a great spot for a day out with the family including an on location portrait session. Kevin Jacobus Photography has worked quite a bit with Trista and her family. My associate photographer Nicolaus photographed their vows renewal at Belknap Mills in Laconia, NH and Trista and I worked together on her “Trash the Dress” session in downtown Nashua, NH and in Greeley Park.

Sandi & Tim’s Granite Rose Wedding Reception

Sandi & Tim’s Granite Rose Wedding Reception

A day after a Lakes Region wedding with Maryann and Kim, I was further south for Sandi and Jim’s wedding at Methuen Music Hall in Methuen, MA. After the ceremony and a few formal photos, we headed back to NH for their wedding reception at the Granite Rose function facility in Hampstead. I photographed Sandi’s brother’s wedding last year as well.

Maryanne and Kim’s Home Barn wedding and Backyard Tent Reception

Maryanne and Kim’s Home Barn wedding and Backyard Tent Reception

Being a NH wedding photographer means having the opportunity to photograph weddings by the sea, in the mountains, on lakes, and in New England country barns. The latter was the case for me in mid-August for Maryanne and Kim’s wedding. They had a rustic barn on their property in the hills of in Gilford, NH, a town that borders Lake Winnipesaukee on the south side. A prominent guest hired a pilot and an aerial photographer to fly over the property between the ceremony and reception so that the newlywed couple could be photographed waving as seen from the unusual view from an airplane. In attendance was former New England Patriots cheerleader Britni Baron.

Allison & Gavin’s Engagement Session Along the Charles River in Boston

Allison & Gavin's Engagement Session Along the Charles River in Boston

Just a quick addition to the blog of Gavin and Allison’s engagement portrait session along the Charles River in Boston. I photographed their engagement portraits and was the photographer for a Boston wedding later in the day. They had the lucky numbers this year with a 10-10-10 wedding. I’ll post images from that wedding soon!

Debbie and Will’s Harvard Club of Boston Wedding Reception

Debbie and Will’s Harvard Club of Boston Wedding Reception

August had me at Will and Debbie’s Harvard Club wedding-it’s a Boston wedding photographers choice location from a dramatic visual perspective. It was a familiar spot for Debbie- she used to work there and was a BU student at one point. The couple was married at Boston University’s Marsh Chapel. It can be pretty dark as there are tiny windows up high and very dark, but stately wood panels that decorate the ballroom. There are balconies on opposite sides of the ballroom, which allowed me to set up big, powerful studio strobes. It also helped to have lighting from event lighting company RC Uplighting for ambiance.

Adam and Melissa’s Promises To Keep Wedding

Adam and Melissa’s Promises To Keep Wedding

Well, now that the new website is up and running, time to catch up on a bunch of blog posts for weddings, events and portraits we’ve photographed over the last year. Getting started with Adam and Melissa’s wedding and reception at Promises To Keep in Derry, NH. Rain forced an indoor ceremony, but it dried up enough for outdoor portraits, which always makes me happy since the grounds at Promises to Keep are a strong point for weddings there and it would be a shame to not be able to take advantage. I also photographed their engagement session earlier in the year- take a look.

Most of the photographs in this gallery are high dynamic range images (HDR) which are made by photographing a scene at many different exposures to obtain proper exposure in light and dark areas of the scene. The photographs are then merged and tone-mapped in post-production to create a single photograph with great color and tone. [...]

Engagement Session Gallery

Engagement Session Gallery

An engagement session is a 1 hour photography experience celebrating the beginning of the journey of wedding planning. Often the first time a couple has been professionally photographed together, scheduling an engagement portrait session is a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera and to get to know your photographer. In addition to prints and gallery wrap canvas, a DVD slideshow set to music along with a link to share on social networks like Facebook are available in addition to photo guest books, signature boards, and a variety of photos provided by the photo shoot can be used for your Save the Date cards.

Trash the Dress

Trash the Dress

Trash the Dress? Not usually. It’s an industry term that has caught on to refer to post-wedding photo sessions. The idea is to create a collection of photographs you wouldn’t be able to on your wedding day. We’ve heard from more than a few brides how they would have loved a beach wedding, circumstances usually preventing that. Most of the time the dress isn’t harmed, other needing a trip to the cleaner’s. Trash the dress may be the most commonly heard term, but it’s also called an encore session, rock the dress, drown the gown, day after session, rock the frock, etc. It’s also a time to be photographed without worrying about getting a dress dirty or if a couple just wants more time creating a series of portraits than the normal timeline of a wedding day permits. A trash the dress session is not about destroying a dress, it’s about the creation of a bold and unique set of photographs you might not otherwise do. If you want the best of both worlds, keep your wedding dress stored away if you are worried about harming it and get an inexpensive dress on eBay or other thrifty means. We’ve had a number of clients do that and report that the cheap dress they bought fit better than the one on their wedding day!

Maternity & Baby

Maternity & Baby

Maternity and newborn baby photos are an important and valuable consideration-much like weddings, the birth of a child is a major life event very much worth documenting with professional photography and prints. With newborns, it’s generally a good idea to photograph them in the first two weeks after birth for that sleeping baby image. We can create custom, cost-effective packages for clients where a maternity photo session is scheduled followed by a series of first-year baby portraits at intervals ranging from birth, 3 months, 6 months and a year or more depending on client preferences. We come to you, which makes it easier for new parents while keeping the little one quiet and happy for the photo shoot. This also allows for photographs with unique settings and items included in photos that have a personal reference for our clients.
