Danielle and Jay’s Wedding Film

Associate videographer Don headed down to Beverly, Massachusetts September 10th to create Danielle and Jay’s wedding film. After the wedding, Don and I met up with Danielle and Jay to record some audio of their thoughts on the day. They started with a “first look” and some portraits at Misselwood at Endicott College. The couple were married at the Lynch Park Rose Garden in Beverly, MA followed by a reception at the Elks Club at Bass Rocks in Gloucester. We’re especially proud of this video as we feel strongly as experienced journalists that we want to put our storytelling stamp on all of our wedding videos. This means going beyond recording footage and delivering it to our clients. It also means going beyond basic editing to instead weave a narrative, in this case, in the couple’s own words and match it with natural sound and images of the day for what I would describe as a literal moving portrait. We think this is worth watching, even if you don’t know them. Hearing their story and watching Don’s careful scene selection mesh makes for an audiovisual journey unlike anything else found in the wedding industry locally.

Trash the Dress Group Photo Shoot!

One of my previous wedding clients organized a group of friends and “knotties” -that’s brides who use the forums on The Knot website when planning their wedding to have a group trash the dress session at Half Moon Beach in Gloucester, MA in September 2009. We had a total of 8 brides, some of which bravely jumped into the ocean at the end of a day of fun photography on the beach rocking the dress. I called the local newspaper to come along and they published a photo of me working as well as a shot of a group of the brides jumping in the ocean in their wedding dresses. Needless to say, we got the attention of lots of passersby as well as some boaters! We brought along Candice French to do the makeup.

Trash the Dress? Not usually. It’s an industry term that has caught on to refer to post-wedding photo sessions. The idea is to create a collection of photographs that you wouldn’t have an opportunity to do on your wedding day. We’ve heard from more than a few brides how they would have loved a beach wedding, but circumstances usually prevented that. Most of the time the dress isn’t harmed, other than needing a trip to the cleaners. Trash the dress may be the most commonly heard term, but it’s also called an encore session, rock the dress, drown the gown, day after session, rock the frock, etc. It’s also a time to be photographed without worrying about getting a dress dirty or if a couple just wants more time creating a series of portraits than the normal timeline of a wedding day permits. A trash the dress session is not about destroying a set of wedding garments, it’s about the creation of a bold and unique set of photographs you might not otherwise do. If you want the best of both worlds, keep your wedding dress stored away if you are worried about harming it and get an inexpensive dress on eBay or other thrifty means. We’ve had a number of clients do that and report that the second inexpensive dress they bought fit better than the one on their wedding day!

Bridal shows, seminars, weddings, portraits…..

The last couple months have been so busy! I’ve been attending bridal shows, wedding photography seminars, shooting lots of weddings and now I’m doing a lot of portraits too! I’ve done some family portrait and trash the dress sessions and there are maternity and baby sessions lined up too. More on the way to be posted soon!

I had booths at the New England Bridal Affair expo at Vesper Country Club in Tyngsboro, MA and at the first-ever Fenway Bridal Festival Sunday Sept. 27. The turn-out was less than expected, with rain all day not helping attendance, but overall it was a great event. I managed to get a photo of my company logo on the centerfield screen before the show got going as my associate Chet helped out at my booth.

The week before, I photographed a group of brides jumping in the ocean in their gowns for a trash the dress session. All this while shooting lots of weddings and portraits. I also attended the Boston WPPI Road Trip Sept. 30. That was a daylong event at Bentley University in Waltham with speakers Vicki Taufer, John Solano, Ken Sklute, Jed Taufer and Bambi Cantrell. Finally, I attended the Digital Wakeup Call Seminar with David Ziser at the Sheraton in Framingham, Monday, Oct. 5. My associate Elena attended too and she won a door prize!

Gloucester, MA, September 20, 2009 — As many as 8 recently married women will don their wedding gowns once again for a “trash the dress” group portrait session with Kevin Jacobus Photography Sunday, Sept. 20 on Half Moon Beach at Stage Fort Park. The trend of bridal portraits with a dramatic twist is gaining popularity as brides seek portraits with the fun and excitement of reliving a part of their wedding day without worrying about getting their dress dirty.

Brides will be photographed by the NH-based wedding and portrait photographer in a variety of themed sessions concluding with 8 women jumping into the ocean in their wedding gowns for a dramatic and unusual photograph.

Half Moon Beach was chosen as a location for its combination of sandy beach and rocky outcroppings that provide a beautiful backdrop for a set of photographs that will emcompass fun and fashion.
